Planet Simulation
For this project I wanted to create a map. But I wanted it to be more than just a map but a part of the worldbuilding process.

The world simulated is intended to have plausible geography, ecosystems and biomes in order to inform the creation of civilizations, cultures, trade routes and much more.
Tectonic Plates
This will dictate continental and oceanic regions on the globe. The tectonic movement will inform the creation of mountain ranges, island chains and other geographical features.

I took this 2D image into a software called GPlates to wrap it around a 3D globe.

Creating Continents
Using my tectonic reference image in GPlates, I simulated where continents would be located and how they would be shaped.

Planet Topography
Using Adobe Illustrator and the continental reference from GPlates, I simulated the topographical features of my planet.

This shows me where mountain ranges, oceanic ridges and important geographical features will appear. These are important in the process of forming civilizations and cultures, as I can now draw on inspiration from our own world's civilizations which share prominent geographical features.

This will also be important in the simulation of ocean currents which will inform how trade routes are formed and how people will most likely explore their oceans.

Winds and Climate
The winds and climate of my simulated world are nearly identical to Earth's. What makes it different is in the previously simulated continents and topography and how the winds and climates react to them.

This will dictate which kinds of crops will grow and what weather will appear in different regions.

This can provide me with information on how civilizations will set up trade and potentially interact with each other.
